Pen Name, Pseudo, Alias, v.s Birth Name
Why?
I’ve worked twelve years to educate myself on writing and working on my craft. I’ve built a portfolio of non-fiction, fiction, educational, and inspirational writing credits in my birth name and now I finally get a book published and it’s under an alias. You may think, what’s with that? Why after all that hard work?
Using a nom de plume (love that phrase) was not my original intention, it hadn’t even entered my mind.
There are a multitude of reasons authors use pen names. One of the most common is, the writer changes genre, like Nora Roberts, (romance to mystery) or J.K. Rowling, (children’s to adult fiction). Some want privacy, others don’t care for their own name. Yet others think depending on subject matter should be written by either a male or female author and change their name to hopefully sell more books. (ex: some think romance should only be written by a woman, others feel sci-fi only by men.) I’m not sure about that logic, but everyone has their reasons.
For me it was the timing, privacy act, and copyrights. In order to publish my original version of “This Sign Was Mine,” I would have had to have a signed, notarized document from each person including, my husband and children, places of business and from any living persons that I used quotes from in the book. In most cases if the person you quote has been dead over fifty years, it’s legal to use their words in your writing, that is unless it’s Winston Churchill. The family still owns his rights and you have to be granted permission and possibly charged for the use.
I made several attempts to get notarized documents from several quoters and buisness’s, after three months with only one response, I decided to move forward with my book and use a pen name.
So every event in “This Sign Was Mine, Message Received!” is absolutely a true and a real experience.
The names and places have been changed to protect the privacy of all those included in the book.
Publishing through Balboa Press (a division of Hay House) has been an excellent learning experience and one I’ll always be grateful for.
